Building and Construction

Building a new house?  Adding on to your house?  Repairing your house?  Retrofitting your house to improve energy efficiency?  Working in construction?  You’re going to have to go shopping!  No matter what you need to spend money on during this process, we hope you’ll continue to find positive alternatives here as we add to this evolving Guide.

This Building and Construction section currently lists a range of products from Insulation to Windows, and services like Natural Building and Renovation and Asbestos Removal.  We are very lucky to have so many local resources to draw upon in this sector.  If you know of something we’re missing, please tell us!

It's important to remember when you are renovating or retrofitting your house, that the house operates as a system.  All the elements of the house: the interior and exterior environments, the envelope (walls, ceilings, doors and windows) mechanical systems (such a your heating system) and occupants' activities affect each other and the performance of the house as a whole.  This means that any change you may make to any one of these elements will affect the others.

Another thing you may find you have to do is dispose of unneeded items!  We hope to help you divert as much from the landfill as possible by providing links and resources for reuse and recycling, as well as proper disposal of dangerous items such as insulation, solvents, etc. Peterborough Reuses.com has two other functions that will also help in this regard, so be sure to fully explore the site.

Always remember when shopping:

1. Is the product durable, or will it and its packaging end up in the landfill?
2. Is the product made/available locally, supporting our local economy and reducing transportation costs?
3. Does the product contain or emit toxins?
4. Did the product require energy to make? Will it require energy to operate or maintain?
